The Truth about Hair Dye

There are some brands that advertise themselves as being clean, or having less harsh ingredients.

The truth is that the ingredient replacements are just as bad, if not worse than, the harsh ingredients they claim to replace. Advertising and marketing techniques to entice buyers into purchasing products have been around since the 19th century. This is what is happening in the beauty industry, and leading to the creation of these ‘honest’ companies.

When it comes to color treated hair, you need both synthetic chemicals and natural products to produce the healthiest looking end result.

Even when one leads a healthy lifestyle, the modern environment we live in contains pollutants and other toxins that continually strip away protective barriers on our hair cuticle, and even our skin.

Did you know that soap was the first beauty product ever invented? Moisturizers, creams and serums followed suit, after stripping our natural skin microbiome with the soap- we then needed a product to combat the disruption we just created. Does that seem backwards to you? (If you are interested in this topic- highly recommend the ‘Explained’ docu-series on Netflix. 20 minute mini documentaries that go over this topic in more detail.)

Box dyes- contain metallic components that can cause chemical reactions with professional products. These dyes are the same ones used to color textiles, upholstery and other garments. They permanently alter the chemical composition of your hair.

PPD Free, Ammonia free, Gluten Free, Paraben free- These claims are meant to convince you that these products are better than everything else out there. These ingredients are replaced with other questionable ingredients where the safety is likely not yet tested or researched.

We don’t know about you- but we will rely on our licensed and well-practiced professionals to decide what’s best for our hair health and desired end result. They are specifically trained to handle the chemicals present in these products and evaluate which formulas are right for us.

At Haus of Pretty, we often get inquiries about whether we carry PPD or Ammonia free formulas, or if we are a ‘clean’ salon. We are hair health and wellness focused, and carry a myriad of options. Our professionals choose the right products custom for you. We make no claims to be a ‘clean product’ salon- though we focus on our environment being clean. This means, truly non toxic paint and accents, non porous surfaces (able to be completely disinfected), proper air filtration, mini bar stocked with wellness teas and drinks, and a minimal/relaxing atmosphere.  A clean environment allows our staff to work at their best and clients to feel comfortable.

Client Tips:

-Always let your stylist know if you do experience any scalp itching or sensitivity post color service. There are modifications to the formulas that can be made to make your experience more comfortable.

-Check out the Environmental Working Group website (www.ewg.org) and search for specific ingredients in their database. This is a reliable source for evaluating the toxicity of products, and can allow you to make more informed decisions.
